PUBH 1001: Introduction to Public Health
Three credits ($150). Offered Fall, Spring, or Full-year.
This course describes the history, philosophy, and science of public health. Students will identify biological, environmental, and social determinants of health from a comprehensive perspective. They will apply these principles to define health problems, evaluate possible causes, and recommend effective public health responses to health concerns. By doing so, students will learn about career opportunities and the complementary role public health plays with health care and voluntary and governmental organizations in protecting the public’s health.
Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of two years of high school social studies.
Instructor Certification Requirements
The minimum degree requirement for instructors wishing to teach UConn ECE Public Health course can be met through the following options. Preferred applicants will have a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences, Biology, History, Law, Political Science, Public Policy or in a closely related field (as judged by the UConn PUBH Department).
A candidate with a Master’s Degree in Education may also be considered if coupled with a strong undergraduate program and appropriate teaching experience in the fields mentioned above.
